The Ten Commandments

1) “You shall have no other gods before me.” This command is against worshiping any god other than the one true God. All other gods are false gods.

2) “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” This command is against making an idol, a visible representation of God. No image we can create can accurately portray God. To make an idol to represent God is to worship a false god.

3) “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.” This is a command against taking the name of the Lord in vain. We are not to treat God’s name lightly. We are to show reverence to God by referring to Him only in respectful, honoring ways.

4) “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” This is a command to set aside the Sabbath (Saturday, the last day of the week) as a day of rest dedicated to the Lord.

5) “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” This is a command to always treat one’s parents with honor and respect.

6) “You shall not murder.” This is a command against the premeditated murder of another human being.

7) “You shall not commit adultery.” This is a command against having sexual relations with anyone other than one’s spouse.

8) “You shall not steal.” This is a command against taking anything that is not one’s own, without the permission of the person to whom it belongs.

9) “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” This is a command prohibiting false testimony against another person. It is essentially a command against lying.

10) “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” This is a command against desiring anything that is not one’s own. Coveting can lead to breaking one of the commandments listed above: murder, adultery, and theft. If it is wrong to do something, it is incorrect to desire to do the same thing.

Many people mistakenly look at the Ten Commandments as a set of rules that, if followed, will guarantee entrance into heaven after death. In contrast, the purpose of the Ten Commandments is to force people to realize that they cannot perfectly obey the Law (Romans 7:7-11) and are therefore in need of God’s mercy and grace. Despite the claims of the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:16, no one can perfectly obey the Ten Commandments (Ecclesiastes 7:20). The Ten Commandments demonstrate that we have all sinned (Romans 3:23) and are therefore in need of God’s mercy and grace, available only through faith in Jesus Christ.

Guidelines To Develop Good Habits!

  1. Read the Bible each morning. An excellent place to start is in the book of Proverbs. Do not worry about how much you read, but what you can get from your reading.
  2. Pray each day. Take time to talk and listen to what you need to share with God.
  3. Trust in God. Your thoughts and feelings can be deceiving.
  4. Fellowship at church. We need fellowship with other believers to strengthen and encourage one another.
  5. When we fail to ask God to forgive us and strengthen us, we get right back up and do not let it discourage us, because God loves us.
  6. Help Others. Take time in prayer to figure out who God wants you to help, and then be of help to them. Assist other believers and non-believers God puts in your path.
  7. Overcome your fears. We all have our set of worries and concerns, yet God tells us not to fear because He is with us and will not forsake us. Renounce worry, anxiety, and doubt.
  8. Do not worry about the future; God’s grace will be enough to meet each new day’s challenges.
  9. Learn how to overcome temptation. Either flee the devil or resist the devil with help from the Lord. Ask someone you trust to keep you accountable and support you.
  10. Share the good news about Jesus. Encourage others by sharing how God has worked in your life. The Bible encourages usalways to bee prepared to answer anyone who asks for the reason for our hope (1 Peter 3:15).

A Christian's life is not an easy life! NeedEncoiuragement.comLife is good, but it is not always the most comfortable! Jesus told us that we would have troubles, but He also told us not to fear because He would be with us. If someone tells you all your problems and worries will disappear if you become a Christian, they have not shared the truth! I discovered that following Christian guidelines is advantageous in the long run.

Sometimes they can be challenging to live by because even though we may proclaim to be a Christian, there are still temptations and other things that make life difficult. It can even be more challenging since living a Christian life means following Godly morals, which the rest of the world may not follow, like lying, cheating, and other sins that give non-believers a so-called advantage that Christians do not have the luxury of committing, since we know they are sinful. But as a Christian, I can pray to Jesus Christ about my problems. The Christian life can sometimes be challenging, but it is worth it in the end!

Talk with other Christians for help. Read God’s word (The Bible for answers. Realize that nothing will happen to you without God allowing it to happen. The good news is that with God working in your life, He can work out all things for the benefit of those who love Him. I would never trade my old life before I became a Christian for my life now as a Christian; that is just a fact!  It is crucial to understand that Christians are not sinless, but we are sinless because of the Holy Spirit.
