10 Bible Verses About The Debt Of Love!

Please get in touch with us if you have any questions or need some encouragement.

This page explains the “debt of love” as a Christian duty to keep loving, forgiving, and treating others with grace, based mainly on Romans 13:8–10 and related verses. We urge you to settle relational “debts” quickly, make things right, and love even difficult people, because love fulfills God’s law. The debt of love is a powerful force God commands us to uphold. When we make the vow of marriage, we promise to be together until death do us part. However, when sin creeps into our lives and relationships, it causes strife and discord, and we may be tempted to break that promise. But this grieves God’s heart because He knows how important it is to pay our debts in full—especially the obligation of love! We all need love and forgiveness for our sins, so why wouldn’t we feel obligated to extend that same grace to others? It can be challenging, but even when reconciliation isn’t possible because of deep grievances or safety concerns, we can’t overlook the debt of love. God clearly commands us to love and forgive one another!

Matthew 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Paying the Debt of Love!

A Debt That Never Ends: Love!

In Romans 13:8, Paul says that we should “owe no man anything except to love one another. Then he says, “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” (verse 8) and that all of the commandments from the Old Testament are summed up in the one command to love your neighbor as yourself (verse 9). In other words, believers fulfill God’s commands by treating others with respect and loving one another.

Let us strive each day to repay this debt by loving one another as Christ loves us — unconditionally and without reservation. Remember Matthew 6:15 — if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive yours. So let’s honor God’s commandment and pay our debts of love in full! ~ Bill Greguska

Why Love Is the Debt We Owe!

Indeed, “one another” includes believers, but this command extends to all people. “His neighbor” (13:8) literally means “the other” and refers to anyone else.

In the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37), Jesus showed that the command (Lev. 19:18), “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” extends even to strangers in need. It applies to people whom we may not especially like and to those who have wronged us.

We do not necessarily have to like them, but we do need to love them. We need to treat them as we treat ourselves.

Understanding the Debt of Love in Romans 13!

No debt in life ought to be everyone’s goal, especially Christians’. There are many types of debt: financial debt, obligation debt, time debt, etc. The debt of love is entirely different.

Are you debt-free in your life? You have no obligation to anyone except the debt of love. Thinking of things this way will clear your mind of stress and anxiety and help you walk closer with God and stress and anxiety and help you walk closer with God and others! ~ Bill Greguska

Romans 13:8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing obligation to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

The Debt of Love: More Than a Feeling!

Debt of love! NeedEncouragement.com

We try to avoid many debts, but the debt of love shouldn’t be one of them!

If you owe someone an apology, make it before another day goes by. If you have wronged someone, now is the time to seek forgiveness. Make things right between you two!

  1. If you owe someone a phone call, make it as soon as possible. If you’ve lost touch with a friend, it is time to reestablish your friendship without further hesitation!
  2. If you owe time and attention, start with family members, like a spouse or a child. Give the other person your time as soon as possible. When you claim someone or something is a priority, show it!
  3. If you owe discipline, you should give it. If you’ve skirted your duties as a parent or supervisor, it’s time to make a plan. Feel free to do so.
  4. If you owe an explanation, please don’t hesitate to offer it. Is someone wondering why you did or didn’t do something? Is now the right time to explain yourself?

You will find that the more unpaid debts you settle, the more you’ll gain. The more you settle, the more balance you’ll restore in your life. You ought to have no obligation except for the debt of love for one another!

Some Specific Scriptures To Encourage You:

1 John 3:16-18 ESV

By this we know love: he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and truth.

James 2:8 ESV

If you truly fulfill the royal law in Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.

Galatians 5:13-14 ESV

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 5:43-44 ESV

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
