When I was growing up, the only thing I can really say I was lazy about was homework. Besides that, I was extremely ambitious and dedicated to basketball, which my mom used as a carrot to help me earn passing grades in school. We are all lazy at times, but when laziness outweighs the desire to be productive and responsible, even when we know there will be consequences, it is a real sign that there is a problem. This issue often stems from fear, burnout, depression, or lack of motivation rather than a character flaw. Overcoming laziness involves identifying the root cause, breaking tasks into small, bite-sized steps, and managing energy rather than trying to force productivity. The negative effects of laziness include missed opportunities, guilt, and reduced self-esteem.

Proverbs 12:24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor.

How Can I Stop Being Lazy?

If you want to stop being lazy and unmotivated, it would be wise to start by identifying the root causes, such as a lack of relationship with God through prayer and Bible reading. There are many issues to examine, such as low self-esteem, fear, alcohol or drug abuse, lack of sleep, and not eating healthy, and address them. Implement small, manageable tasks to build momentum, and allow yourself short breaks to recharge during work. Ask God in prayer for help with your laziness, and be open to hearing his answer.
