We all know talking politics can get heated. I’ve learned that political advice is best given without poking the bear on opposing beliefs; at the same time, I have found I can share my thoughts if I believe they’ll help someone hear the truth rather than believe a lie. Everyone has their own political and religious beliefs, and respecting and acknowledging this is essential. When I was growing up, my mom wisely advised me not to discuss politics openly, as it often leads to heated debates that can divide people. In my late 40s, two friends, Brian Larson and John Wegner, introduced me to politics after I had avoided it for many years. They gave me political advice and explained things so I could understand better. However, genuine conversations about politics are essential for progress and understanding when shared respectfully.

Proverbs 20:3 reminds us that avoiding strife is honorable, but applying this to today’s political debates requires understanding how biblical principles guide respectful dialogue in current issues.

What Does the Bible Say About Politics?

In the United States, citizens can vote according to their conscience, guided by God’s will. When political actions conflict with faith, prayer, and the pursuit of wisdom from the Holy Spirit, pray for help as we navigate civic responsibilities while remaining faithful. While political parties have different platforms, our primary allegiance is to Christ, and biblical unity should guide our engagement beyond party lines.

For example, if a person values life rather than abortion, they would vote accordingly. Despite my mother’s advice to avoid controversial topics like politics or religion, I have chosen a more balanced approach: understanding others’ viewpoints while sharing my own experiences. Thoughtful discussions are fruitful for both parties when I agree with someone on certain political beliefs or values. However, when confronted with differing opinions, I believe the answer is to ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and to show respect to all people. ~  Bill Greguska
