Could you take a look at how you can overcome depression?

That might seem like a strange statement that depression is sometimes a choice, but in many cases, in this world or ours, it is true. We sometimes choose depression based on our situation or perspective of things. We need to use the power that God has given us, as it says in 2 Timothy 1:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline. A person needs to want to feel better and strive to do so. Once a person gets complacent and discouraged for too long, it makes it that much harder to get out of the self-induced depression.

Are we expecting too much? Are we comparing ourselves to others and falling short as a result? Are we not taking care of this life that God has given us? I am not saying this happens all the time, but it happens more when we actually realize it. Be honest with yourself, are you really depressed or just tired of trying? Things like eating healthy, getting exercise, sleeping 7-8 hours per night, and being social with family and friends. All these contribute to overcoming some depression. The truth will set you free.

Proverbs 24:26 An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.

What Does Grief Have To Do With Depression?

But, I also learned that losing a loved one to death is not the only grief experience, so I had to redefine the word. My new definition was broader and more encompassing. It read like this:
“Grief is the pain we feel anytime we lose something that was once precious to us.”
  • It can be losing a loved one through death, separation, or divorce.
  • A friend through estrangement, alienation, or geographical distance.
  • It can be the loss of a home.
  • It can be a loss of face, morality, health, or job loss.

Depression Has Been Around For Centuries!

Psalm 42

1 As the deer pants for streams of water,  so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why am I so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.

8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I say to God my Rock,  “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why am I so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

How To Deal With Depression?

Six Things That Can Be Overwhelming Without God!

They all break our hearts and shake our self-identity, and they all carry with them some reasonably predictable stages:
  1. Numbness. This is an intriguing mixture of shock and strength— almost as if God anesthetizes us to get us through those first difficult hours and days.
  2. Expressed Emotions. We need to cry it out, work it out, talk it out, pray it out, and worship it.
  3. Existential (intensely personal) Loneliness. “No one feels it quite like I do.” No one can do it for us. We must walk the valley alone, yet not alone, for God is with us.
  4. Questioning. “Why did this have to happen?” we ask. “Why did this happen to me? Why didn’t God save me from this?”
  5. Guilt. “Did I do all I could do? Did I do my best?”
  6. Return to Reality. This is when we finally have the strength to pick up and continue with our lives. The mark of faith and victory is the ability to go on with God as our Helper.
Grief is a journey that takes time. As we move through the valley, God anoints us with the balm of healing in his own time and in his particular way.
