My Personal Experience With Phone Helplines!

I launched a phone helpline a couple of years before starting NeedEncouragement.com. I got the idea in the first Place from Pastor Dale Radke. He had a 24-hour recorded helpline that I called repeatedly to hear his wonderful prerecorded messages. I called him time after time because I was deep in my troubles with alcohol and drugs between the ages of 16 and 26 (1976-1986).

 

I even left messages on his machine, and Pastor Dale and I met once at Mayfair Mall years ago, before he died. He was my lifeline, so I set up my helpline with 414-541-HELP. Dale Radke will forever be known as the “God Love” guy, the Milwaukee man whose voice could be heard for nearly 40 years, offering a daily verse from Scripture and some Godly words to anyone who dialed 463-5683 – GOD-LOVE. Pastor Dale was a lay pastor of a small church. He turned to ministry late in life, only to find he’d been doing that work all along. I consider Pastor Dale a link in my faith walk with the Lord—someone I wanted to emulate.

But my mother always reminded me that there is one person we can turn to who will never let us down – God! He loves every one of us and wants nothing more than for us to reach out and ask for His help.

If you do decide to call a helpline like I did when I was struggling with addiction, remember that asking for help is an excellent sign of self-care. The voice on the other end of the line may be unfamiliar initially, but they’re there because they care about your well-being just as much as God does. So don’t hesitate to reach out – whether through a phone helpline or prayer – because sometimes all it takes is one small step towards getting unstuck from where we are in life!
