10 Bible Verses About Depression (Optional)!

On this page, you will learn that Depression can be deeply painful and disabling, but there is hope and help. This page encourages people to seek God through prayer and Scripture while also taking practical steps such as exercising, eating well, getting enough sleep, connecting with others, and practicing gratitude. It also supports professional help—including doctors, counselors, therapy, and medication when appropriate. The central message is that God can bring encouragement and healing through His Word and through the people and resources He places in our lives.

I have been depressed two times in my life, once in high school when I did not even think I could make it another day. I became very weak, saddened, and hopeless. The other time was when I was 45 years old, going through a very painful and emotionally draining divorce. I mention this because I got help from the Lord and people at church, and I even needed medical help, which can sometimes help with recovery.

Psalm 143:7-8 Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

What Does Grief Have To Do With Depression?

But I also learned that losing a loved one to death is not the only grief experience, so I had to redefine the word. My new definition was broader and more encompassing. It read like this:
“Grief is the pain we feel anytime we lose something that was once precious to us.”
  • It can be losing a loved one through death, separation, or divorce.
  • A friend through estrangement, alienation, or geographical distance.
  • It can be losing a home.
  • It can mean losing face, morality, health, or a job.

Depression Has Been Around For Centuries!

Psalm 42

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why am I so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.

8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why am I so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

How To Deal With Depression?

Six Things That Can Be Overwhelming Without God!

They all break our hearts and shake our self-identity, and they all carry with them some reasonably predictable stages:
  1. Numbness. This is an intriguing mixture of shock and strength— almost as if God anesthetizes us to get us through those first difficult hours and days.
  2. Expressed Emotions. We need to cry it out, work it out, talk it out, pray it out, and worship it.
  3. Existential (intensely personal) Loneliness. “No one feels it quite like I do.” No one can do it for us. We must walk the valley alone, yet not alone, for God is with us.
  4. Questioning. “Why did this have to happen?” we ask. “Why did this happen to me? “Why didn’t God save me from this?”
  5. Guilt. “Did I do all I could do? Did I do my best?”
  6. Return to Reality. This is when we finally have the strength to pick up and keep living. The mark of faith and victory is the ability to go on with God as our Helper.
Grief is a journey that takes time. As we move through the valley, God anoints us with the balm of healing in his own time and in his particular way.
