If you are struggling with a chronic illness or injury, please know that you are not alone. It can be incredibly tough on both the individual going through it and the family members who help take care of them. However, I have learned that being a caregiver for someone with a chronic illness can bring immense joy and fulfillment to your life if approached with love and compassion. I took care of Ben Hersh for 7 1/2 years who had cerebral palsy, and it was a blessing to help him and his family.
My parents were both diagnosed with various chronic illnesses, but my mom never hesitated to lovingly care for my dad. When she needed help later on in life due to her health issues, I gladly took care of my mom for the last 8 years of her life, like she was always there for me. Being a good caregiver is all about treating others as you would want someone else to treat you if the tables were turned. Yes, it can be discouraging at times, but keeping your eyes on the Lord will give you strength during those difficult moments. Remember that half the battle is taking care of others selflessly because we genuinely care about them despite their challenges. You got this! If you are struggling with a chronic illness or injury, you know how hard it can be on you. It also can be challenging for the family member who helps take care of them. My dad had Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s, but my mom lovingly took care of him with some help. Then, later on, my mom had diabetes and asthma and needed help, so I helped her since she did not want to go into a nursing home. I thankfully did get a little help from others. Dr. Baugrud was an extremely big help in helping me medically take care of my mom. ~ Bill Greguska
