1. Can We Laugh at Ourselves?
Lord, I try to have a good sense of humor and to be able to laugh at myself sometimes instead of always taking our self so seriously. I know that laughter can be very comforting and bring people together in a unique bonding way. Besides that, laughter is good for our health; it creates endorphins and helps your body and mind to relax and feel recharged. Lord, I like to think of something funny or embarrassing that I did, and share it with a friend; it will allow me to laugh at myself. Usually, the other person will share something they said or did in return and have an excellent opportunity to share some laughter. Lord, laughter is like salt, too much of it is not good, just like not enough of it is not good either.
Lord, help us to remember to laugh and enjoy this life that you have blessed us with.
Help us to find the humor in things instead of always seeing things in a negative or pessimistic light because, with you, all things are possible. Lord, please help us open our eyes to all the joy and humor in this world we live in. Also, help me to think of some things that I can help to bring laughter and happiness into my life and other peoples live?
Ecclesiastes 3:4 A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
Laugh at yourself, but don’t ever aim your doubt at yourself. Be bold. When you embark for strange places, don’t leave any of yourself safely onshore. Have the nerve to go into unexplored territory. ~ Alan Alda played Hawkeye Pierce in the war television series M*A*S*H.
2. The Problems with Anger
Lord, I thank you for how you helped me get a handle on my anger. We all need to make sure that we all get a good firm handle on our temper before it does any damage in your life. Lord, you know my anger has caused much damage in terms of broken relationships, and loss of opportunities. I like to think of it in these words, “Control my anger or else my anger will control me.” When it is possible, I try never to respond to someone when I am are angry with them. Ideally, I decide to buy some time to collect your thoughts and feelings and ask you, Lord, what I ought to do. I admit that I might have an anger problem, but with your help Lord, it has not poked its ugly head out for a long time. Lord, I have found that there is no shame in praying to you for help and asking others for Godly advice.
Lord, help us all to control our anger before it tries to jump up out of nowhere.
Please help us to remove the sin that so easily entangles us. It can be helpful to think about the last time I lost our temper, and the problems that resulted from that, now I can think of ways how I could handle it differently for the next time anger knocks at your door? Help us all to keep all our emotions in check, not just with our anger.
Matthew 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured. ~ Mark Twain, American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, and publisher.
4. Fears That Hold Us Back
Lord, help me keep in mind that fear can not harm me unless my anxiety or fear stops me from doing what I need to do, and what you Lord intended for me to do. Fear is like a bully; if you stand up to it, most likely, it will lose its drive. But the only way to determine that is to stand up against it. Yes, sometimes, fear is good to prevent us from doing certain foolish or risky things, but the fear I am referring to is the fear that can paralyze you from living the life I was meant to live.
Lord, we often worry and are afraid of things that we have no control over, please give us the wisdom to cast all our anxieties on to you and trust that you will work something out for our good.
Please keep fear of crippling us from doing what we need to do. Lord, I know that some concerns are meant to warn us, other worries just seem to stop us.
Matthew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. ~ Nelson Mandela President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
7. Your Peace of Mind
Lord, I purposely make time to enjoy being alone with you each morning, so that I can think things out, and find peace with you despite all the stress and issues that are weaved throughout my life. Because if I am always running here and there chasing after this and that, it is no wonder why my relationship with you Lord is not where I want it to be. When I purposefully carve time in the morning and off and on through my day to be with you, Lord, to check in to be sure I am on the right track and the right train. Lord, you are my compass to follow and my anchor to stabilize me.
Lord, we know that true peace of mind only comes from knowing and trusting in you.
When I keep an open palm to you, Lord, and allow you to give or take away things and people in my life, you will find peace of mind in doing so. Please help keep us all free from worry. Help us all not to be shy or afraid to lean on you, Lord, to find the peace of mind that we all desire. When we look back on our life, we will see that when we were doing your will Lord, that is when we have experienced the most peace of mind during those times, which is not a coincidence by any means.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming. ~ John Wooden famous head basketball coach at UCLA.
8. Self Control Made Easy
Lord, you have given us all a measure of self-control that we need to be able to say no to the things that are not good for us, and yes to the things that are good for us too. Lord, one way I can have more self-control is by guarding my mouth, which will save me from getting into many unnecessary difficulties and troubles. I feel if I do not control myself, I will be required to make apologies and even possibly lose friendships and opportunities because of it.
Lord, sometimes it is hard for all of us to control our feeling and thoughts at times, but I pray that through you Lord, that you will direct our path.
Please help us to think a little more before we speak or do things. Give us self control and teach us how to live and be more and more like you with our words and deeds. Lord, we might think we are getting away with something, but we need to remember that forbidden fruits create many jams, and also, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
Galatians 5:23: gentleness and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.
I think our culture encourages all of us always to put our best foot forward. I think it’s a good thing. I think it’s nice to rise to the occasion, to be kind and considerate, and have self-control. ~ Amy Grant is an American singer, songwriter, musician, author, and media personality.
9. When Anxiety Builds Up
Lord, you know that my good friend Sister Sue Sauer many times has told me to keep a pulse on my anxiety level and not to let it get too high or out of control. Lord, for me to do this, it was a conscious effort on my part to be aware of how anxiety was affecting me in negative ways. Lord, it was not until I got a handle on my emotional pulse that I could finally deal with life, in a way it was not overwhelming to me. I am so thankful that I took Sue’s advice, and it helped me quite a bit. Lord, we all need to ask ourselves two questions, “What can be my plan when I feel the anxiety starts to creep into my life? What are some ways I can prevent stress from sneaking up on me?
Lord, I pray that we all can stay close to you each day so that when the harder time comes to us, that you will lead us in the way, we ought to go.
Help to free our minds of any anxiety and walk in your peace without the stress that sometimes can be overwhelming and relentless. Lord, I found a good way to make sure we all take care of our health is by the acronym: H.A.L.T. Do not get to Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. I have also learned to be sure to take all our anxiety on to you, Lord. Also, sometimes taking in a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds, and letting out the air can be such a great tool in reducing anxiety and stress for me.
1 Peter 5:7: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Become a worry-slapper. Treat frets like mosquitoes. Do you procrastinate when a bloodsucking bug lights on your skin? ‘I’ll take care of it in a moment.’ Of course, you don’t! You give the critter the slap it deserves. Be equally decisive with anxiety. ~ Max Lucado best-selling Christian author, writer, and preacher.
13. Life Can Get Scary
Lord, it is when life seems to become scary or overwhelming, that I have found it to be so wise to take one day at a time, and even one moment at a time when it is necessary. I have experienced some scary times in my life, but it is always good to know that you, Lord, are there for each one of us. You have always seemed to put the right people in my life to help me, and in return, I have tried to reach out to encourage others out of gratitude for what you have done for me. Often life can get overwhelming and even scary; the question is, where do we go for help? If we think about it for a second, since you are for us, who can be against us or hurt us? Lord, I have learned that often the things that I have worried about in the past, never actually happen or if they do, they are not as bad as I thought they would be.
Lord, help us know that we are never alone, you are always with us and watching over us.
Please calm and comfort us when we are scared, for you are always there to call upon in prayer, you are never late or absent, and we thank you for the fact that you are so very faithful. Why would we want to wait until we are scared if you could plan to prevent those situations that we all can prepare ahead of time with prayer and wise counsel? We always need to keep in mind that in a scary world, the safest place is close to you, Lord.
Isaiah 41:10: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Switching from one career to another can be scary, but it also can be a thrilling experience. Look at it as an opportunity to go after what you want to accomplish in life and make a difference in the world. The key is to take small, conscious steps and prepare yourself for a successful transition. ~ Jack Canfield is a motivational speaker and co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.
14. Problems Are like Stepping Stones
Lord, I have discovered that sometimes questions can open our eyes to other things that need to be taken care of. I always need to remember to keep my eyes on you, Lord, but when the waves start getting bigger, and if we have been in the practice of regularly looking to you for help, it will be much easier to keep our eyes on you Lord in a more difficult time. When we try using problems as stepping stones or hurdles to the goals we have in our life, we are on the right track.
Lord, you tell us in Your Word, that there will always be trouble and problems in this world, we rest on your promise that you have overcome this world.
Let us look at problems as opportunities and stepping stones that are just a part of your plan. When we are burdened with many difficulties, where do we usually reach out for help first? Have we not figured out yet that our way often leads to a hopeless end, but your way Lord, leads to an endless hope. Lord, open my mind to find some ways that we can use our problems as stepping stones to our solutions rather than walls to prevent us from doing your will.
Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
If you have a positive attitude and continually strive to give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater challenges. ~ Pat Riley former coach, player and executive in the National Basketball Association.
16. The Pursuit of Happiness
Lord, sometimes to see if I am following you, I need to ask myself questions like, “What is my definition of happiness?” It is so very interesting to me that when I put the happiness of others in front of my happiness, I discovered what real happiness is, which is not found in acquiring money or things but rather having a deep relationship with you Lord, and the people you have put into my life. I feel encouraged when I write someone a card, call or visit someone who needs encouragement or has been an encouragement to me in my life. You have made us social creatures, and when we are social, we are doing what you created us to do.
Lord, I pray that we all seek more after the joy of knowing and following you, and encouraging and helping one another rather than the temporary feelings that happiness can give to us.
I pray that I continue to find my happiness by trying to make others happy, I know it sounds like a strange formula, but it works for me! When I aim to love, honor, and please you Lord, and also serve others, the natural by-product will be joy and happiness.
Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
“Many people feel that their happiness is directly related to their happenings. If their happenings happen to happen, the way they happen, to want their happenings to happen, they are happy. But if their happens don’t happen to happen the way they happen to want their happenings to happen, they are unhappy!” ~ Pastor Stuart Briscoe Evangelical Christian author, international speaker, and the former senior pastor of Elmbrook Church, where I attended for 23 years in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
17. Do I Have a Positive Outlook?
Lord, I have learned the importance of having a positive outlook. I always try to keep my eyes looking upward to you for your inspiration and motivation. When I have looked at my life as a glass being half empty, that is just what I got. But when I looked at my life as a glass half full, that is what I got too. How we look at things makes a big difference in the results we get in life. Lord, I trust you even if I am not seeing your work in my life at certain times, but I believe in you Lord, because all you have already done in my life, and what your Word in the Bible says, plus others signs and wonders I have experienced for almost the past six decades.
Lord, we all get down emotionally at times, please strengthen us to bounce back as we keep our thoughts on you, Lord. Please help us all to see your truth instead of the lies from Satan. It is our free will choice to look at life in a positive way or a negative way. Help us all to choose positive every time. Lord, I need to remember that the only time I ought to ever look down on someone is when you and I are giving them a hand picking them up from the troubles they are presently in.
Proverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
I truly believe in positive synergy, that your positive mindset gives you a more hopeful outlook, and belief that you can do something great means you will do something great. ~ Russell Wilson is an American football quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.
